Traditional Synthesizer Music is a studio album by Canadian electronic musician Venetian Snares, announced 17 December 2015 and released 19 February 2016 on Planet Mu records. Unlike other albums by Venetian Snares, this album was composed and live recorded entirely on modular synthesizer equipment. Aaron Funk has explored analog synthesizer music before, but he usually saves this type of work for his Last Step moniker, which veers toward acid techno rather than the frenetic breakcore of his more well-known guise, Venetian Snares. On Traditional Synthesizer Music, he steps away from the crushing breakbeats, shocking samples, and monstrous vocals of his previous VSnares releases, but his penchant for complex time signatures remains as strong as ever. If the result still sounds like a logical continuation of his previous work, that's probably because this sort of hardware has long been a part of his playbook. Certainly, this isn't the record where Snares starts making dreamy hippy kosmische. But even while it's being difficult, Traditional Synthesizer Music feels relatively palatable by Snares standards. The album's analog genesis lends it a cushioned wooziness, making the manic energy more palatable in the long haul. Lesen Sie Rezensionen und informieren Sie sich über beteiligte Personen

Each sound contained within was created purely with the modular synthesize. Aaron Funk born January 11, 1975, known as Venetian Snares, is a Canadian electronic musician based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is widely known for innovating and popularising the breakcore genre, and is one of the most recognisable artists to be signed to Planet Mu, an experimental electronic music label. His signature style involves meticulously complex drums, eclectic use of samples, and odd time signatures, in particular, 74. venetian snares. Offical Venetian Snares page on Snares. He pushes his machines to their furthest limits, twisting the rhythms into time signatures that most musicians simply wouldn't dream of, accelerating the tempo to a heart-quickening pace on opening cut Dreamt Person v3, and embellishing the drum patterns with intricate drum fills and stereo separation. Please get in touch with me if you have a copy of this album with the CDr and are willing to sell. I'm dying for more of this album :)

Some people might understand the title of this release as Venetian Snares bragging over using synthesizers in a way only he could. But it seems to be more of an inside joke for him as he explained in an interview:Q: So where does the album title come from?A: It’s just that the idea of traditional synthesiser music is completely absurd, but I was sort of making songs – melodic, structured songs – so, as far as synth music goes, it’s pretty traditional.Q: I wondered if it was to do with the way that modular synths have become trendy and you’ve been using them for a while?A: No, no, no. It wasn’t a diss on anything like that. Honestly, I just thought it was a really funny title because it’s ridiculous – traditional synthesiser music, as though it’s some cultural thing that’s set in stone…Read the full interview here:https://www.attackmagazine.com/features/long-read/venetian-snares-lets-all-be-real/

If I knew more about this music I would mix "Everything About You is Special" with something by Blaerg. Maybe there is someone out there willing to do the digging for a proper, balanced set.

for all of you that don't know a lot about synths, about 50% of the companies mentioned in the thank you are modular synth companies. In lamens terms a modular synth is a build your own synth kit; a really fucking complicated, unbelievably expensive synth kit which is most of the time used for creating experimental IDM. some of the more popular companies mentioned are Make Noise, Mutable Instruments, and Noise Engineering.

Ahhhhh if by these songs I like the IDM, ramdom, experimental, acid and unexpected good song I am glad to have discovered this treasure and have it in my mp4 player.

This is great! I had an even stranger experience... I ordered the new Legowelt album UFOcus, from Bleep. I also ordered Traditional Synthesizer Music. The UFOcus album was delayed for a few months, and this album was with the order, from the U.K., so all I had were the mp3s of Traditional Synthesizer Music. I've been listening to this album off my phone in the car for months now, I absolutely love it!! But today the vinyl came in the mail, reading, "45rpm" I thought it was a brilliant trickster joke! I thought that Venetian Snates went Richard D. James and made the album playable at 33 or 45!!!! I've been digging this hard at 45rpm, kicking back to old school break core and noisecore! Oh well, it's good either way :)

Note that while the synthesizer work itself seems fairly traditional, at least on the surface of it, the percussive work is disappointingly formulaic. For a guy who is in love with odd time signatures, he could have gone miles further in weirding out the drumtrack. Perhaps that will come later. The signal pathing options with a modular rig such as his are unending. If you delve beneath the surface though, there is nothing traditional about the synthesizer music here. It is the product of a massive modular synthesizer in which all component parts are recent and as such they expectedly do recent things unthought of or impossible in the previous hey-day of modular synthesizers. All that aside, this is a magnificent st... I mean album.

I almost like this better than the album. Really very well done.

For some reason, this release reminds me of "A Broken Frame" by Depeche Mode...... though this sounds nothing like that album or Depeche Mode in particular, the vibe of the modular synths conjures up the vibe of ABF.Nice release!

Played this at 45rpm as prescribed on label, whoa! Then played it through at 33.3, wow!

"even for him" <---- Exactly my thoughts! As soon as track 2 hit, I was like man, is this really played at 45? Sounded absurdly fast. Think I'll listen at 33 like we're apparently supposed to from now on.

I also wondered about the "45rpm" on the label. The official Bandcamp MP3 versions are equal to 33rpm though, - which also sounds more musical to me. Played at 45rpm some of the drum programming just seems too fast - even for him. So yeah, I'm pretty sure 33RPM is the correct speed, and that whoever made the label simply made a mistake.

It's not meant to be played at 45rpm. From Snare's FB page: "Hey everybody with Traditional Synthesizer Music vinyls, we accidentally printed 45rpm on the labels when in fact they are 33rpm. Sorry about that!"
