Released on April 1968, Odessey and Oracle is perhaps the Zombies' most popular album, gaining fast critical acclaim. Its psychedelic, rock and pop themes allowed the album to be held as one of the most influential albums of the 60s, as well as one of the best from that era, considering the entries on multiple best of all time lists such as Rolling Stone. Four singles were released from Odessey and Oracle: Friends of Mine, Care of Cell 44, Time of the Season and Butchers Tale Western Front 1914. Odessey and Oracle was intended as a final statement, a bold last hurrah, having worked hard for three years only to see the quality of their gigs decline as the hits stopped coming. The results are consistently pleasing, surprising, and challenging: Hung Up on a Dream and Changes are some of the most powerful psychedelic poprock ever heard out of England, with a solid rhythm section, a hot Mellotron sound, and chiming, hard guitar, as well as highly melodic piano. Album 1968 12 Songs. Рок not for Odessey and Oracle the Zombies would be remembered as a minor band from the second wave of the British Invasion in the fall of 1964 which also brought in the Animals and the Kinks. The Zombies created a whole new sound for this album. Before their sound had been Blunstones voice with minimal harmonies from the others. Here they are a group whose vocal parts use complex harmonies, often without one singer dominating

At the time of its release in 1968, the Zombies’ swan song LP was largely overlooked and ignored until nearly two years later when the irresistible “Time of the Season” finally scored as a hit single. One of the British Invasion’s most consistent groups (“She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No”), they had disbanded and it took years of accumulated critical goodwill for their album to attain its deserved status as a psychedelic classic. With mellotron, horns, interweaving harmonies and expansive melodies, Odessey and Oracle is one of the psychedelic era’s most adventurous and luxuriant albums. Singer Colin Blunstone uses his gentle, smoky voice for maximum effect, adding a gorgeous melancholy to the piano and choir chamber pop of “A Rose for Emily,” a cautious joy to the Penny Lane-like “This Will Be Our Year,” a jaunty teasing to the Beach Boys-Kinks-Turtles pastiche of “Care of Cell 44” and a seductive come-on to “Time of the Season.” The album is a production masterpiece, balancing the era’s thirst for new sounds with the needed economy to keep the songs properly grounded.

This LP does NOT feature the original mono mix. It's a folddown of the stereo. Care Of Cell 44 is the full length version and Time Of The Season doesn't have the extra organ notes as heard in the true mono mix. Nice curiosity though.

That's really helpful to know: you didn't have to take one for the team on that did you?

Mint copy review:Quite a bit of crackle throughout despite cleaning and brushing with an anti-static brush. Disappointing.

So how long does this usually take for a decent one to appear for sale? Better yet, why is mono usually the rarest thing when it comes to every pressing. Yet it ends up superior!!!Update: finally got a mono pressing, have fun selling those guys.

Looking for a (n intact) sleeve for this for $10 or less. I've got the record but not sleeve. Hit me up if you can help me out!

Ok so I have just received a copy of this Big Beat pressing, purchased for £10, not sealed so has been used but is pretty much N/Mint. Everything looks authentic, cover and labels are clear and not “fuzzy”, and it’s the stamped matrix copy. I can confirm that there is no brief whisper during the intro to ‘Changes’, and there are categorically NO horns during ‘TWBOY’!! So definitely is not a mono version for ‘TWBOY’. Overall the sound quality is excellent and it’s a nice quiet vinyl, but as ‘TWBOY’ isn’t mono as advertised on the back of the cover, then surely this cannot be a genuine copy (??). Common sense would suggest a stamped matrix should indicate a true copy as that’s true for 99.9% of stamped original pressings as opposed to their etched bootleg counterparts (etching being easier to fake than stamping), but this certainly throws that theory out of the window......well at least for this version. In any case the copy I have does sound great regardless, and will be a more than adequate substitute until I bag an original mono copy that’s not being trashed and can be picked up for a bargain price.......hopefully a seller at some point doesn’t realise quite what they have and advertises it wrong on eBay....oh and this seller also has an original drag cover of Bowie’s TMWSTW.......what are the odds??!! ;-)

Great reissue, if you don't want to drop hundreds on an original, get this one. Great sound and great album. All I could complain about is that the record isn't 180g. Other than that, all around good.
Owomed
pah, both these prices are way off the mark on this one, try 5 times that amount. Super rare record. so its shown up 3 times on popsike, in 2013/14..

So far on the Zombies O&O thread:https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/zombies-odessey-and-oracle-best-pressing.733452/page-8#post-21181827we have reasoned forth that there exist etched matrix copies from the late 90s, one example has "WIKD 181-A / B" only and an "MA" initial marking standing for Maxwell Anandappa who worked for Damont. Damont also existed between 86 and 2006 before they closed. One way to possibly also identify an early copy is if there are horns on This Will Be Our Year. This likely means that a legit analog source was used but of course its possible to use multiple sources for a record cut.Its all still up in the air on whats good and not. There also exist etched runouts with dotted lines instead of fully etched, those seem to not be of legit sources, and some stamped versions also seem much later and not very good.

Original Big Beat from '97: WIKD 181 A/B (ETCH)Stacked or stamped are later pressings.1969 US Terre Haute pressings are nice if clean.Time of the Zombies is a 2 lp that contains both USA lp's and sounds great.2012(?) Repertoire Mono lp is my go to...Nice.Original Date/CBS $$$$, not worth it for sound alone... IMO

This particular version of Big Beat's O&O reissue corresponds to the CD master on Zombie Heaven and does not use the original stereo production master: This WIll Be Our Year is true stereo w/o horns (as opposed to fake stereo on original pressings) and Changes has whispering at the intro (not on originals). Also there is filerting and noise reduction applied. This vinyl pressing is_ exactly_ the same as the CD master for the Zombie Heaven and subsequent CD reissues. Despite that, it still sounds great and the vinyl quality and mastering is superb.
Ionzar
A real curiosity this. Unless you can afford £1000 for the original UK mono pressing, this is the only version of the original mono album mix you can get. The original master tape has long-since perished and other mono versions, such as the 2015 half-speed version on Repertoire, are reassemblies of single mixes, and salvaged / restored original recordings. Consequently there are differences in audio between tracks and some over ‘maximising’ at the mastering stage, which gives it an inauthentic quality and sone unfortunate artefacts. While this is Cold War era and probably a needle drop, you get a good sense of what the original mono album mix sounded like as a whole.
Jerinovir
Average reissue certainly could have been better. Repertoire or Japanese SHM CD are at least as good
Cordantrius
NOTE: The "fake stereo" is actually a stereo mix that sounds good in mono and in stereo. Also, The "real" pressings have etched runouts. The "fake" pressings have stamped runouts.Timothy Honiss .

Billhambone I think you mean the other way around. Machine stamped matrix is legit, hand-etched is counterfeit. I also have both. The more recent pressings available from Amazon are hand etched, and sound like garbage. The 1997 Big Beat is machine stamped and all analog and sounds fantastic. There are people who have hand etched pressings from the 90s that sound great. Its all a big pot of indestinguishable pressings that no one wants to sort.

leonthepro timothyhoniss I was replying to "jimmythemod76" not leonthepro .sorry for the confusion. Leonthepro, I have compared it to the original UK pressing (CBS ‎– S 63280, CBS ‎– 63280, CBS ‎– SPBG 63280) and another copy that I borrowed from a friend. So it sounds better than the original? In my opinion, yes, it sound richer and the vinyl quality and sleeve is great.

CBS/Haarlem (and later Record Industry) used stamped runouts. Also I was under the impression that "This Will be Our Year" is mono. There's like no consensus to this and it keeps on changing. lol
Pad
Are you sure about that? It would make more sense that stamped runouts are harder to fake while etched ones are much easier and harder to pinpoint as the actual one. I mean what if there is a counterfeit thats also etched, how do you tell which etching is right?
Anarasida
Hello sorry to bother you. Is it worth getting this version. Does it play and sound great. Jamie.

The already mis-spelt word Odessey is mis-spelt even further on the inside labels as well - on both sides! (ODESSY !!!!!)

Can anyone confirm if this contains the original mix of This Will Be Our Year? The original version has horn overdubs, but even some mono mixes omit them.

A bit late, but yes, it has the horn overdubs.

Pretty minimal crackling on this with my copy and no bad pops. In fact I'm actually really impressed by the dynamics of this pressing, worth picking up along with looking nice.

No distortion on my copy. Decent quality and on nice orange vinyl!

Don't buy this here, folks. Still available on the Newbury site for $25.99.

You do realize this is a website that provides a marketplace for buying and selling records, right?

Be forewarned, this issue is cool AF visually, but the pressing is noisy as hell. Snap, Crackle & Pop make repeated cameo appearances. Would be inclined to return if I didn't think they would all sound like this. White opaque probably would've improved sound quality, but the translucent sure is purty.
Mogelv
It's not just your copy. I have the same issue with mine. Snap crackle and pop are a issue on mine as well and unfortunately it is present during the more quiet song A Rose For Emily. It does sound pretty good other than that..and like you said it does look cool. I have the black reissue as well which does sound better.

Some low frequency whooshing/rumble at the beginning of both sides. My first copy was clicky on side 1 but replacement copy is much better. Nice detail and bass, but distortion seems easier to hear too. For me the Big Beat version may possibly win on feel/EQ rather than detail, but they're both nice. The vinyl for this edition is fairly transparent orange, but a bit milky and not crystal clear. £18 in store retail at time of release.
Uleran
Overall pretty good, but I also heard distortion. Nice release.
Flocton
I have a copy of this, all the numbers match the original release, but it has a white stereo sticker instead of a gold sticker. Has anyone seen this? All the copies I've seen have a gold stereo sticker, maybe the gold wore off?
Bolv
Different plants or stores might have used different stickers. Not a big deal I dont think.
zmejka
I have a copy with a white stereo sticker; its also different from the one pictured because it has an arrow on each side of the stereo. The notes do say "some copies have a gold sticker", perhaps meaning that the other stickers are white?

Runouts and soundquality information please. . . . . .

calluses My copy is not completely flat. Sound quality is alright, but bass is (at times) a bit on the boomy side through my setup. Doesn't have the clarity or punch of the Repertoire half-speed Abbey Road remasters, the '87 Rhino pressing, or even the Big Beat reissue. Sounds a lot like the cheaper Varèse Sarabande repressing from a few years ago, which makes sense. Identical matrix/runout to the existing Varese reissues: 3020672541-A, 3020672541-B Thanks

A thoroughly unattractive cover IMHO, esp. as compared to the original beauty.
Granigrinn
Amazing reissue. An overall clean copy with punchy bass and warm sound. Do not hesitate to pick up this pressing.
Wnex
Oddly enough my copy has #0000 which makes me wonder if mine is outside the numbered edition, or if it by any chance is a japanese practice to start the serial numbers with #0
Goldendragon
Nice soft and warm pressing, but a bit dulled sound for my taste... Like often with US Columbia records.
Bluecliff
Better alternative? UK first press maybe? Or any new and cheap pressing that are better hopefully?

timothyhoniss If it is stamped, it is a counterfeit pressing. The real pressings are etched. I know because I have two copies of this pressing, one etched, one stamped. At this point its impossible to know. Ive heard some say stamped and some say etched. Looks like its useless to ask.

The new copies currently in stores appear to be a legit release that is *based on* the 1997 edition. The back cover clearly refers to www.acerecords.co.uk, which I doubt existed in 1997, and Ace Records is selling new copies on their website. Unlikely to be counterfeit, but it'd be great if anyone can find out when these newer copies were produced so we can have a proper discogs entry for it.

calluses I stand corrected. That domain was registered before August 1996. However, I still think these new sealed copies that I find in all Toronto record shops surely can’t be NOS from 1997. It must’ve been repressed in recent years, but not sure when. Some of the new ones sound awful though, what matrix runouts does your copy have if it was purchased in late 90s? Need very detailed descriptions please.

this isn't true, the web existed then, plus they say "we are also on the world wide web" which was something that was said back then when the internet was new.
Jube
This sounds great for a slightly lightweight pressing at only 140 grams.

beatlekid123 This sounds great for a slightly lightweight pressing at only 140 grams. Vinyl weight doesnt affect the sound at all.

BEWARE! The 1997 Big Beat version has stamped matrix numbers. The version that's being sold on Amazon right now is a counterfeit. It has hand written deadwax numbers, the label fonts are different and everything looks kind of fuzzy. It also sounds dull compared to the all analog version from 1997.

Burking
Not true. it is the other way around. The Big Beat version has hand etched runouts and the fake copies have stamped runouts.
Foxanayn
Guy says that the stamped sounds bad. Are you sure its the stamped matrix which is the good one?
Cae
If you use common sense, you will realize that a record pressed 20 years ago is still not still being sold as new....
Olwado
I bought this shortly after its release, and mine has hand scratched cat. numbers in the dead wax (not stamped). "This Will Be Our Year" has horns, so I guess it is the mono mix? Quality seems good, so perhaps there are multiple Big Beat pressings? Photos of the labels (for the counterfeit) and a separate listing would be useful for ID.
Brakora
Thanks for the insight...I just saw this copy at the local record store. I'll pass.
fabscf
Probably not the same sources for the two sides of this vinyl. Side 1 sounds correct but sometimes compressed, not a good separation between instruments. Side 2 is very good.
Dammy
The guitar intro on Maybe After He's Gone sounds particularly bad.
Burilar
This release, as well as the mono/stereo Big Beat CD, both sound great. If you are seeking this album on vinyl, it's worth noting that at the time of this writing this is the only version in print/still available out of the 3-4 I see in record stores that's cut from analogue tapes.
Fog
From the sound quality it seems that they were trying hard to get the best out of the aged reel to reel tape with software. You clearly hear it on "Beechwood Park". This version is not that bad, but I wish there would be a better monophonic reissue.
Zymbl
One of the best albums ever made. Magic
BlessСhild
Cut from analogue tapes, can't be bad!
Light out of Fildon
FYI, this is the 140 gram version of the 2014 version that was 180 gram weight. I think it sounds pretty alright, though.
Modred
One of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Yannara
I have a copy of this, it's almost exactly the same as the CBS version but not on CBS!The cover is very similar, and the sound quality is brilliant, I paid about 50 quid. A fraction of an original and it's cut from the same master tapes as the original CBS version.Bonus.
Livina
I wasn't sure about this reissue (Big Beat, UK, 1997) but it sounds really great. It's well balanced and clear. I wish I could compare it with an original issue.
Kale
The notes claim that they're using the mono mix of "This Will Be Our Year" but it really sounds like they found a stereo mix without horns as it's most definitely not mono and doesn't smack of fake stereo.
Opilar
Sorry guys, meant for this to be in the main Zombies cat. Any help to place this there is much appreciated.
