After nearly imploding at the start of the previous decade, Metallica poked fun at their own fragility with Hardwiredto Self-Destruct, a double album of confident, cocksure metal ragers that prove theyve never been more stable. They bookended it with two of their best songs in 25 years, the punky, three-minute invective Hardwired and the grinding techno-horror thrasher Spit Out the Bone, and they filled the rest of it with punishing riffs, pummeling drums and pessimistic lyrics - in other words, its a perfect Metallica record.
