Stuart picks his current favourites from the world of the obscure, the unusual, the weird and the fabulous. This week's featured album comes from experimental electronics duo Panasonic. Inspired by the industrial sound of early 80s acts such as Throbbing Gristle, their 1997 album Kulma builds on this with restless beats, big bass drones and plenty of overdrive distortion. Show less. 2 hours. Kulma, for example, is a masterpiece of experimental techno. The first half of the album gives a chance for techno heads to stick around and follow the deconstruction. Teurastamo and Vapina are still suitable for the dancefloor, although they have clearly been tailored for the living room. But as one progresses from one track to the next, the atmosphere becomes colder, drier, and charged with electricity instead of electro beats. Album 1996 14 Songs. Pan Sonic. Electronic Finnish for anglecorner is the second album from Finnish arch-experimentalists Pan Sonic and showed a marked movement away from the intense barrage of noise of the first album Vakio. Instead we are treated to a peerless collection of analogue techno stormers, glitchy restless beats, disturbing drones, sub-atomic bass tones and the all-important overdriven distortion. Release group by Panasonic. Pan Sonic - originally Panasonic, until an inevitable confrontation with the Japanese manufacturing giant of the same name - was among the most active and well-known exports from Finland's experimental techno underground, the first to reach acclaim. read more. top albums. similar to. electronicsquelches Albums. I purchased this Panasonic and the little Kaito KA321. Of the two, this has been a better AM performer. In the evening I can pick up KOH Reno, which is almost 250 miles away from where I live. Keep in mind that AM not working as well during daytime is normal. I get one station during the daytime here in rural northern California, and it's in a language I don't understand. In the evening, the band opens up and I can get station after station. It's a bit annoying that this radio doesn't do FM stereo through headphones. So I like the Kaito KA321 better for portable use when ex. A classic for those who want to know how to get more out of music. Title: Confessions of a Pop Performer 1975. Anyone know of any possible reissues of early PS stuff?
This stuff desperately needs reissuing especially now that he's passed away. This album, 'A' and 'Vakio' are masterpieces of minimal techno and experimental electronic music that remain unsurpassed.
An arid, minimal, sparsely arranged (although there is plenty of detail sitting in the mix, well buried) hours worth of listening awaits. This is all beats, clicks, buzzes and drones but really carefully done. Kulma is nowhere near my favourite Pan Sonic release (I give this 3 stars 'average' but it's worth an extra half-star) but it has two aces amongst the blips, test-tones and stripped-back radiophonic weirdness: the first and last tracks, which build, urge, cajole and propel the listener towards a fittingly blissful electro-climax. The central portion meanders by comparison, which is not to say it is in any way inferior, just less neurally invasive!
Electronic milestone, experimental techno masterpiece. I LOVE this record since my first meeting!
Noisy, experimental but clearly danceable music. Sound is incredible. Another techno classic.
I am one of those crazy fans that actually has a copy of each release of this album: both the "Blast First!" original pressing with the complete uncensored band name on the cover (before the legal disputes) as well as the "Mute" re-issue with the second "a" missing in the band name. "KULMA" represents another good introduction to the electric world of Panasonic, with a good selection of their various styles. From the rhythm-heavy pieces like "Teurastamo" and "Vapina" to the chilled-out mechanical illbient of "Aines" and "-25", Panasonic explore their usual routes, letting their machines do the driving, and leaving the actual humans behind the project acting more like passengers. Although the Panasonic sound is not for everyone, "KULMA" may be a good introductory point to new listeners who haven't hear other releases. Special notice to the last piece "Moottori" which is by far one of their most abbrasive (but not noise) rhythm tracks ever put to disc.
Pure minimalistic analogues and beats. Also released as Pan Sonic (copy that I own) which I assume was due to legal reasons.
concrete music without samples. trains, factories, cars, machines. it's all there. excellent and essential.
