His swaggering brand of cool-hand jazz makes for potent lowrider fuel-the cosmic keys and snappy drums could tempt even Roy Ayers to ride shotgun. If somebody were to surreptitiously start playing Kamaal Williams' solo debut album, 2018's The Return, and then assert that it was a vintage library music LP of '70s instrumental jazz-funk the kind of stock commercial recording intended to evince a popular sound of the era, recorded by studio musicians for general licensing to radio, film, and TV, only to be. rediscovered decades later by hipster crate diggers and vinyl addicts, you'd have no reason to doubt the veracity of the claim. Much like the London pianists debut album, Black Focus in the drums-and-keys duo Yussef Kamaal, The Return is rooted in the harmonic intricacies of predecessors like Herbie Hancock and Lonnie Liston Smith. But its inventive rhythms-particularly on the hard-charging Catch the Loop and the snapping, deep-in-the-pocket Broken Theme -come straight from Londons broken-beat scene, which soulfully exploded drum 'n' bass in the late '90s. My 180 gram plays and sounds fine, played back using an audio technica AT95ae stylus, technics 1210, on a 1980s pioneer amp and speakers. Ofcourse sound quality is open to interpretation of the beholder I guess, and what you are playing it on.

Like someone mentioned below, "Black Focus" is a more solid experience, although some of the tracks here are just beyond words. First time I heard music from this genius was in July 2018, peaking on strong, pure acid to a 4-hour Mixmaster Morris-set at Ozora. I still have very vivid memories of going nuts to the second part of "Salaam”. My close friend, with whom I shared the trip with, came up to me, and all I could express verbally was the mantra "so much beauty, so much beauty, so much beauty"..... Seriously though - so much beauty.... Catch a glimpse of his soulful brilliance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcQtdjIB23Y

Came here to see if anyone else had remarked on the rather ordinary sound quality on this pressing (black 180). Too bad as it’s a fine album.

I have this on white vinyl, and to my wears it sounds absolutely FLAWLESS! Granted i’m not hyper-nitpicky, but every time this album gets put on I groove my ass off and not a thing interrupts my flow, thats for damn sure. I can’t speak on the black, but buy the white vinyl with confidence.

Unreal how bad the pressing is, mine has scratches and hairlines of through the album. Pop and cracks all along. Big disappointment.
Jogas
Not as good as Black Focus but track 8 (Medina) is sooooo good.

My God, i have the black vinyl pressing and it sounds ablsolutly aweful! Very flat non dynamic sounding almost like a demo recording. Had to check thru my entire setup thinking it was a technical issue but turned out its the aweful cut, reeeaal shame :(

Got this from Rough Trade last month and finally got around to listening to it.....had to stop listening to it as the pressing sounds so bad.
Wrathmaster
Can anyone confirm if the sound quality is better than the white vinyl release?
Painwind
my copy sounds great! no surface noise to speak of.
Giamah
White vinyl and same issues with sound quality. This, coupled with the multiple 'limited edition' releases, has not made for a good first experience with Black Focus Records.
Snowseeker
Solid musicianship, but why do some songs have the sound quality of rehearsal recordings?
Murn
I think the sound was something that was done on purpose.
Haal
Truly awful pressing...at least the white vinyl UK pressing is. Ended up returning it to rough trade who listened to it and confirmed the bad pressing.....they've had tones of returns. Black vinyl pressing seems to be OK. Avoid the white vinyl - awful.

Through this record you'll remind the Black Focus sound, but it's definitely not the masterpiece Kamaal previously did with Yussef Dayes. Don't blame the new drummer but the compositions simply don't reach the same level. Two or three good banging tunes for sure, but unfortunately the rest is just vibbin... This deserves 3 stars or so, not more.

I'm looking for a copy of this on red vinyl if anyone has one they would like to sell?

one of the best releases this year, don't sleep, get it now

I really enjoyed the Yussef Kamaal album and was really looking forward to this album when I pre ordered it. Now that I have it, I’m sorry to say but the music and the whole vibe of the album is forced, soulless and inauthentic. I guess it’s now clear that the real soul of Yussef Kamaal was Yussef Dayes. In terms of his chops, I don’t think Kamaal Williams has enough to carry a whole album. The album is just kind of boring. The cut with a fourth musician, a 1970s-style fusion guitarist, is a little better, but it really doesn’t match the passion of any cut on the Yussef Kamaal album. I found particularly annoying all the cries of “woo” and “yeah” that pop up randomly across The Return, as if the musicians are so carried away by their own funkiness that they have to cry out. Frankly, it’s embarrassing and sad. If interested in keyboard led soulful jazz funk, I’d say start with the two albums by Hysear Don Walker, the early 1970s albums by Ramsey Lewis and, if you can afford it, Seasons by Pete Jolly.

As a fellow music snob, it is evident that this release was a poorly executed cash grab. From the packaging, to the grooves and the sonics. But, if this music is truly the optimal output of the artist, it is still better than a load of other musicians immensely more "successful" than Kamaal. 6/10
Daiktilar
Production & sound quality a bit questionable too...and yeah, why the "oohs" & "ahs"?
Pryl
Fair enough, but I don't agree. I DO agree that Black Focus is a better record - but that was close to perfect. This is just extremely good
Simple fellow
Just got a brand new copy of the white album. Experienced very noticeable vinyl defects and "scratchy" static, especially on side B on the last few tracks. Unfortunate because its a really good album and but its a bummer you can't listen thought since the vinyl static makes its virtually unlistenable on some of the best tracks.
Adokelv
I have the same issues! WTF! whats going on with quality control and how the hell did they approve the TPs before official pressings!!
Manona
Same problem with the black vinyl I got. Virtually unlistenable...
Vareyma
I received a black vinyl edition from Amazon, and it sounds incredible. This is one hell of a modern jazz album! Highly recommended.
Quashant
Hi guys what is the difference between BFR001LPX and BFR001DL ?
one life
White copy from Bleep. Vinyl perfectly flat and sounds crystal clear..
Androlhala
Anyone else received s slightly warped copy of the white vinyl ? Mine is warped- not quite the fruit bowl effect and it's playable. Just getting fed up upon receiving badly pressed or warped rekkid of late..
HappyLove
Yeah I got the black vinyl. A lot of scratches And scuffs clearly visible on the vinyl. Very crackly in parts. Overall quite noisy sounding record... Good music on it though.
Kerdana
Ask them if it is possible to return the return.
Jeb
sorry to hear that :(i'm waiting for the white vinyl version to arrive as well, now wondering if I made a mistake. what's the sound quality like on this release?
Zodama
That's not good- brand new sealed copies should be in mint condition. Sounds like you need to send your copy back & I shall do the same. try my luck with another copy from a different shop..
Vetibert
i got a black copy. not warped, but covered in scuffs and crackly in quieter parts. bummed.
