Album

The Snow Goose is the third studio album by the band Camel, released in 1975. The critical success of The White Rider suite based on J. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and appearing on the band's previous 1974 album, Mirage inspired the group to write more novel-inspired conceptual suites. The band considered several novels on which to base their next album. For a time they settled on Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse, and some songs were written before the idea was abandoned in favour of Paul. The Snow Goose - Camel. Camel's classic period started with The Snow Goose, an instrumental concept album based on a novella by Paul Gallico. Although there are no lyrics on the album - two songs feature wordless vocals - the music follows the emotional arc of the novella's story, which is about a lonely man named Rhayader who helps nurse a wounded snow goose back to health with the help of a young girl called Fritha he recently befriended. Once the goose is healed, it is set free, but Fritha no longer visits the man because the goose is gone. Later, Rhayader is killed in battle during the evacuation of D. The band played extensively around their home town of Guildford, Surrey before changing their name to Strange Brew. Camel is the first studio album by English progressive rock band Camel, released on MCA Records in February 1973. By August 1972, Camel were signed to MCA Records. They quickly entered the studio to record their first self-titled album, Camel. A collection of individual songs, chiefly from Andrew Latimer and Peter Bardens, the album was greeted with muted success and MCA did not take an option for a second album. Where can I see that this is a Belgium release?
Wnex
Does anyone have this pressing? What does it sound like?
Jare
I have it and I find it absolutely amazing. Flat, dead quiet, with nice bass, just the way I want my records to be. The album is a masterpiece, of course.Get it, you won't be disappointed.
Nilabor
What's interesting about this copy is that it doesn't have the "Music Inspired By" disclaimer that Camel was forced to add.Was this version a rerelease after the legal threats dissolved, a release from before the legal threats, or did Camel just not have to worry about the US edition?Google's giving me nothing on the subject, only saying that the disclaimer was dropped on a CD rerelease years later.
Gravelblade
Here is what I found on Wikipedia, and is probably all we are going to find about the "Inspired By" issue: "The album's name, originally The Snow Goose was altered to Music Inspired by The Snow Goose to accommodate legal protests by Paul Gallico. The album was originally due to feature lyrics based on Gallico's text, but this was abandoned due to the copyright objections." So it sounds like the band had to backtrack a little and not put any lyrics into the music like they wanted to, but there was still a legal issue anyway. What a shame legalities have to get in the way of intellectualism and creativity.
inetserfer
Good question, because I too have a copy without the disclaimer. I did not realize there was a legal issue when I was younger and have never really cared about it, but now that I've become an old fart and am going through 40+ years of stuff, that would make perfect sense. I always thought "The Snow Goose" came out after this LP (just because that was the order I became aware of both in my life) or it was just a coincidence in the names. I am curious about this also - maybe this version is worth more than $3.00!
Marilore
It's just one of the best progressive rock album I own beside Pink Floyd's master piece Wish you where here. It's just a great flow music which webbed together.
Mikarr
IMO, one of greatest progressive rock albums ever!!! A strong one.

It is endearingly Camel that it is neither Tolkien, nor Tolstoy or even Hesse which provides the conceptual framework for this 40-odd minute instrumental oeuvre, but rather Paul Gallico's ("available in all good book stores") Snow Goose. It is the novella's sweet and tender sentiments that are approximate for a band whom for all tense and purposes don’t "rock", but rather glide in mirage. So too Andrew Latimer's guitar, the prominent main-stay of the band's musical journey, which is more synonymous with the flight in the air than a ruckus show of cock prowess. Therefore as the album acoustically lulls in eerie solemnity amidst the extreme melodic good vibes of Latimer's led guitar and occasional flute, along with Peter Bardens' array of moogs, organs, and effects; it is the dynamic of modest self-awareness and economy which makes this particular inspiration so engaging, and poignant. A
