Boards of Canada's first significant release, 1996's Hi Scores EP, has been remastered from the original tapes and reissued. The duo's tonal tendencies were already well developed: all six tracks feature their trademark four-bar chord progressions and cycling contrapuntal melodies. But Hi Scores might be most exciting for the way it breaks from their later work

If you are new to BOC, just listen to the track Hi Scores. It'll synchronise your innards to the ways of the Lallans. Feel free to move on from there.
Any reason to opt for this release instead of the 2014 one? Are the channels still reversed?
Hawk Flying
I'm sure the channels are oriented the same way they are in the 2014 release. BoC explained that they actually got fucked up when they made the initial release and are reversed on that version. They have been "corrected" now.
Warp Records lives up to its name, as my record came just that - warped. Fortunately it does not effect the playback, just looks weird on the turntable.
elegant stranger
Haha, you're right! Welp. .
Shame this is released by SKAM then.... . . . .
I can only agree with the other comments below. This records sounds great - it's very dynamic, warm and detailed, with lots of punch, very analogue sounding - is there a chance this is AAA? As mtngchi stated, I am sure the 2018 release will be identical too, will probably pick up another copy on release.
Bleep page states it was "remastered from original digital audio tapes", which in my opinion, despite being digital doesn't diminish the sound quality for this release.
Vinyl repress up for pre-order on Bleep (they say "2018 edition", but I guess it'll be identical) https://bleep.com/release/5213-boards-of-canada-hi-scores?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=tweet&utm_campaign=Hi%20Scores
Such a great pressing all around. Turquoise Hexagon Sun and Seeya Later actually sounds better here than on the vinyl reissues of MHTRTC and Twoism respectively in my opinion.PS: Huh, it's sold out on Skam bleepstore, and vinyl gone from Bleep. Prices drove a bit up, I hope it gets a repress soon, cuz it's that good.PS2: Listening back between them now, I think the Twoism mix of Seeya Later is also good in a different way, mid-range-rich and "warmer", while the Hi Scores mix is detailed and crisp.
I second this comment, I wish the LP represses were as good as this one.
This remaster is fantastic. It's one of my better sounding records I own actually and i'm not exactly sure why.
I know what you mean! I really appreciate the quality control on this one
Excellent reissue. Cool to see the artwork in color and the braille sticker is always a nice touch. Poster is nice too. The record itself is the heaviest I have seen... You could knock someone out with this thing. Sounds great too. My favorite tracks are A1, A2, and B3.
A great selection of BOC tracks. To any new listeners, this is the release I recommend you listen to. "Everything You Do Is A Balloon" was the first track I ever hear by these guys. Amazing, haunting melodies put to a laidback acoustic drum beat.
mine was Sixtyniner :) on twoism. very cool to...still listen to BOC
I thought I remembered this being a lot more valuable than $30.
Same! I've seen copies of this go for £150+ before now
nice reissue
Excellent (re)release! Wish they would do this with Boc Maxima!
Sounds brilliant, great music to start off with as well
Anyone compared this to the older masters? This one is very clean...still a veneer of grain from the analog recording process. Wonder if its too clean and maybe too compressed
Amazing copy with the channels properly sided. Apparently mixed by the band members themselves from the original DATs. Been waiting for this for quite some time and could be arguably the ultimate version that BoC originally intended to release. Highly recommended and a steal if you love BoC.
I bought the old version like two weeks before they announced this new version!
excellent quality.
So nice to finally have this back in my collection. other than those early releases i've never seen or heard i now own all BoC realeases. Would be nice if Warp would put out a compilation of BoC remixes as some of those are rather nice.
Great record, really good sounding release.
did anyone else receive an empty skam records sleeve that was hand stamped? weird!
is there any misspressings or scratchings on this one like the previous BoC rereleases?
No pops or groove noise, great sound. Very nice pressing indeed,
Just finished listening to mine, and it sounded awesome.
just copped mine and no flaws
Throw her heart
Just noticed the Braille sticker (on mine anyway) doesn't say Boards of Canada on it, rather boäds of canada.
my copy is correct, says 'Boards of Canada' in contracted braille.
My copy came today. The picture of the two girls on the cover is in colour! I wish I could do a good quality scan, it looks fantastic. Great record.
Sound incredible!!!
one of my favorites.very nice.
one of my favorites.I never get tired of listening to it.
Two Scots boys have done magnificently well on combining IDM & Ambient on this release, Two most standouts that do it for me.. 'Hi scores' & 'Everything you do is a balloon' .. absolutely float my boat! Like me..If you don't feel Inspirationaly effected.. Change genre,
Sadaron above the Gods
Thank you Fujee,
I agree Rod!
This review is for the quality of the pressing, not the music (which is obviously five stars). I bought this reissue when it came out in 1999. I have never been thrilled with the pressing quality. It's muddy and overdriven. I compared this version of Turquoise Hexagon Sun with the vinyl reissue of Music Has the Right from 2002. That version is so much cleaner and clearer.
I have just found out that the copy I bought on week of release in November 2002 is this version, the 2003 edition. It didn't have a paper insert, either :( Whether it was issued this way or lost in the record store I don't know. I am 100% sure of the date of purchase because I still have the detailed receipt (staff discount included, I worked at the record store in question) and the price sticker is dated, also.
HI SCORES is the EP that made Boards of Canada a big deal, back when everything released by Skam was a big deal. The presence of "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" is enough to make it a classic, but the moody thump of the title track provides solid cover, even if it doesn't display the same delicacy. "Nlogax," on the other hand, goes for an almost electro rhythm even after the melody cements it firmly in Canadian territory, whereas "Seeya Later" brings in a very mellow funk. "June 9th" sounds at times like INCUNABUNA-era Autechre, though with that special Boards spin. Indeed, "Everything You Do Is A Balloon" takes the album out on that special nostalgia we associate with BoC. Still a lovely little journey.
"June 9th" rates high as an all time great piece of music. But "Nlogax" is the secret space disco piece! A very rich EP."Everything You Do Is Balloon" washes you right out with lush beauty. Tons to love from this EP. Right down to the elegant jacket concepts.
A really nice 12" from the scottish brothers Michael Sandison & Marcus Eion Sandison. Actually all Boards Of Canada works are really great but this EP contains some of the most beautiful songs from this duo. I first heard their Mini LP Twoism some years ago and I was in another world of new and strange sounds. From there on, I bought everything from this guys what was pressed on vinyl (the older tapes are ultra rare!). So when you like Downtempo, you have to check this fantastic EP!
I feel this release is overrated. BoC's production effort and talent is obvious in this, but it doesn't achieve much, and the disjoint mood of the individual tracks makes it seem like a compilation rather than an EP. Positives include the jazzy influences and great use of slow breakbeats, and negatives include the lack of direction or purpose in the music. A nonessential release, only get it if you're a collector or an addict (or both).
Probably my favorite material by the duo. Very classic PBS wanderings style BOC on display here. The crunchy beats and synths of "Hi Scores" opens this ep perfectly. Beautifully nostalgic in a way only these two have been able to pull off. I'm definitely in debt to them for "Nlogax", a heavenly electro track with funk synth, thick beats and some nicely chopped vocals. I have a hard time believing they didn't build a time machine, go back to 1979 and steal an unreleased album of b-boy hip-hop/electro and mix it with Vangelis outtakes. In a nutshell, that's what this music sounds like to me. Add the stand out track "Everything you do is a balloon", and you have one of the most genre defining albums to emerge in the last decade. One of my top albums of all time.
This release has all the Boards' touches, cerebral melodies, crackling beats & the earthy sound thay have mastered, but also this E.P. features a couple of there (shall I say) experimental type stuff..but it's all good with 'Everything You Do Is A Balloon' & 'Nlogax' being 2 of my favourites.Track this down at all costs!!!
This was my first taste of BOC, and to this day it remains my favourite release. It is also quite different to everything else they've released since. There are three tracks on this EP which are particularly strong, and still move me many years after first hearing them."Hi Scores" is really special, and combines beautiful pads with crunchy, distorted beats. It is actually one of the darker tracks on the album, and is quite paradoxical to its title - I would have expected Hi Scores to represent something more playful and nostalgic - like the first time the brothers played a video game perhaps. I'd really like to the know the history of this track."Nlogax" starts with a simplistic yet funky 4/4 rhythm, but really starts to get interesting when it metamorphosises into a twisted, skittering, fractured version of its former self. The incomprehensible vocal cutup effect was also used in "Telephasic Workshop", and is also made popular by label-mates Gescom on their track "Keynell". "Everything You Do Is A Balloon" is painfully beautiful. The melody in particular is superb, and it remains one of their strongest, and most emotive tracks to date. All in all, an exceptional EP, and one which transcends time and musical trends.... and will always touch the heart.
At first this was my least favorite release by BoC until several listens to Everything You Do Is A Balloon on the SKAMPLER compilation. I know what you’re probably thinking right now this is one of the most highly regarded releases in the electronic music community, and you didn’t like it? The first release I had bought by BoC was Geogaddi and I was blown away. Nothing I had heard could have compared. This totally changed my views on electronic music. Hi Scores was a more simplistic, rude recording than Geogaddi and didn’t appeal to me right off. But after several listens to the title track and June 9th the album bled together and all the tracks became classics. Now this is one of my most prized possessions, and got me into the SKAM record label. Highly recommended to anyone even to somebody not into music like this. Check it out as quickly as possible and give it a few listens before you pass negative judgment.
"Nlogax" is one of my favourite Boards tracks ever, despite being a bit more up-beat than normal. Really spacey acidey techno on this track, which along with the brooding and the darkly beautiful "Everything you do is a ballon" make Hi-Scores an essential purchase.
Nostalgic melodies over crunchy beats. This release from the Skam record label gives us a small look into the vast collection of music Boards of Canada have made since their debut in the 80's. It seems to bring about strange memories of childhood. This album always reminds me of the sunspots you see on a clear summer day when you look into the sky. Just Beautiful.
Timeless EP, with the last track Everything you do is a ballon being one of my all time favourite tracks, sounds really old, like music you would play after world war 11, or after a hard nights clubbing......Music to get lost inside. Had to score a copy of this on CD as well for long car journey's. Released before the label starting going pear shaped
Seriously, this is the best thing Boards of Canada ever put out, so why such small quantities? The first and last tracks are amazing, and playing them is probably the best way to explain Boards of Canada. Very nostalgic, emotional, oddly named songs. I'd love to know where they came up with "Everything You Do Is A Balloon"
I just received my CD copy of Hi Scores- FINALLY. It is an IDM masterpiece- 6 tracks of pastoral bliss. The best tracks are: Hi Scores; Turquoise Hexagon Sun (of course); June 9th; and, Everything You Do is a Balloon. A wonderful precursor to Music Has the Right to Children and a great starting point for anyone not familiar with the genius that is BoC. If you can find this release, by all means GET IT! If anything else, it will be a collectible (as hard as it is to get).....enjoy.
