Opening with the tongue-in-cheek We're So Cool, the Au Pairs' debut record is a stunner, from Lesley Woods' scratchy guitar and declamatory vocals to lead guitarist Paul Foad's brittle soloing. This is an uncompromising, defiant record: gender roles are turned upside down, as are theories about sex and sexuality, and hetero- and homosexual relationships are put under a microscope. Playing With A Different Sex. Au Pairs Format: Audio CD. The Au Pairs have been compared to Gang of Four and that's fairly accurate. But as much as I loved the Entertainment album by Gang of Four, I'd rate Playing With a Different Sex every bit its equal. You could almost call them a Female Gang of Four due to the commanding lead vocals of Lesley Woods, but we can't forget that two of the main members were men . That juxtaposition marks the length of Playing with a Different Sex, involved topics subversively tackled, all bolstered by infectiously deft songwriting. There isnt a single moment on the Au Pairs debut that it isnt a head-nodding, feet-swaying, dance-your-ass-off good time from a musical standpoint. And in through every crack left open between sax freak-outs, guitar shredding, and Jane Munros supremely agile bass-work, Woods and co. snuck in social consciousness by the song-load. Once funk-tinged closer Its Obvious. Unlike many bands of the day, however, the Au Pairs at least initially backed it up with searing, confrontational songs celebrating sexuality from a woman's perspective. Also, they took swipes a

Does anyone have any thoughts on this pressing? I see a subpar average rating, but no insight (very annoying!).

Repetition is a cover from Bowie's Lodger album. Not sure who gets the writing credit

Wonderful cd by an under-rated band. Use CAUTION when buying this pressing. It was made by PDO with inferior lacquer; look for {PDO disc rot} on the search engine of your choice. My copy is now completely unplayable. This amazing album really needs a re-pressing by a competent company...

Just to clarify, not all RPM releases were manufactured by PDO, as i own this item, and it's in perfect condition, also has no mention of PDO anywhere on the disc... apparently, all discs manufactured by PDO have their name in the hub of disc(top side), or underneath/hub inside, so when/if purchasing, make sure to inquire about this detail, plus the inferior lacquer problem that PDO had, was picked up in late 1992, at which point they switched to a new improved coating format, so also possible that a CD that was manufactured by PDO in 1992 could be free of the CD rot problem, and remember, all PDO discs were ok from 1993 onwards! Happy Hunting :)
